COSMOS. Cultural Osmosis – Mythology & Art is an application that offers a new, non-linear approach to encoding Greek mythology in its written (Myths) and visual forms (Art) and reveals the correlations between different myths and different artworks.

COSMOS is co‐financed by the European Union and Greek national funds through the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation”, under the call “RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVATE”. The project’s partners were ISL – IIT – NCSR “Demokritos” (NCSRD) and Ekdotike Athenon (EA) (2018-2022).

Level Myths. The three dynamic windows (a) Stories, (b) Characters, and (c) Places. The Myth of the abduction of Europa.

COSMOS’ primary goal, apart from presenting the stories of Greek Mythology, is to demonstrate the following:

1. The relation between Greek Mythology and Art. Greek Mythology has always been a source of inspiration in Art throughout time.

2. The information about the (a) Characters and (b) Places of the Myths.

3. The information about the (a) depicted Characters and (b) exhibition Places of these Myths’ relevant Art.

4. The correlations between different Myths due to common (a) elements or influences (story based/primary connections) (b) Characters or Places (secondary connections).

5. The correlations between different Artworks due to common (a) depicted Characters, (b) exhibition Places, or (c) Artists.

6. The “loose” relation between the Myths in a mythological timeline.

Level Art. The three dynamic windows (a) Artworks, (b) Characters, and (c) Places. Europa and the bull, the depiction of the abduction of Europa, on a Red-figure krater from 480 B.C.

COSMOS recognizes three elements of information in Myths (a) the Stories (text), (b) the Characters (that participate in the Stories), and (c) the Locations (where the Stories evolve). Respectively, COSMOS recognizes three elements of information in Art (a) the Artworks (images), (b) the Characters (depicted in the Artworks), and (c) the Locations (where the Artworks were found or exhibited).

COSMOS comprises two interconnected levels, Myths, and Art. Each one is organized in three dynamic windows that visualize the correlations among their elements, thus offering a complete picture to the user. Level Myths include a) the Myths’ window as stories, b) the participating Characters’ window, and c) the Places’ window that the Myths evolve, whereas level Art includes: a) the portrayals of Myths in Artworks’ window, b) the depicted Characters’ window, and c) the Places’ window with their present location and the original one if known.
